The Major’s Top 14 Field Reports of 2014

As the year draws to a close, the internet will soon be littered with various top-10 lists counting down the best of this or that in 2014. It seems everyone loves a good countdown, as the late Casey Kasem proved on the radio waves every Sunday for nearly 40 years. Although The Major is never one to play favorites, seeing as we’re in the memories business we’ve decided to take part in this annual ritual by celebrating some of the special moments we were fortunate to be a part of this year.

If you traveled with us in 2014, the annual H&B Yearbook will soon arrive in your mailbox, filled with group photos and special memories from the year’s Expeditions. However, these represent just a small portion of the photos and stories we received throughout the year. Thanks to Steve Jobs and social media, it is now easier than ever for our members to share their favorite memories with Major Haversham, many times right in the moment itself. The Major calls these dispatches from across the pond Field Reports, and what follows are some of the best he received during the 2014 travel season.

An unforgettable moment on the Old Course captured by Jackie Rosenthal.

Although pictures often say a thousand words, it’s the stories behind the photos that make them unforgettable. Case in point…This from Dave Edwards, PGA of Dubuque Golf & Country Club.

“On Wednesday, September 10, while playing at Ballybunion, play had backed up on the par-3, 15th, which was playing 210 yards. Paul Ellerbeck was waiting to tee off with his hybrid when the group behind arrived to the tee. Eric Lucy happened to be in the group and decided to take a photo of Paul as he teed off. The pin was located at the bottom of a slope on the front of the green, and Paul’s shot hit on the right side, rolled up the slope, then swung left and back toward the hole. As it happens, the shot went in for Paul’s first career hole-in-one. It was witnessed by his group which included Ron Amundson, Mike Burton and Doug Schmid, as well as the foursome behind which included Jim Mulgrew, Eric Lucy, Done Shine, and Tom Woodward. With 20 members in our group, the resulting bar tab was considerable but well worth it!”

When we say “Golf at its Finest, Life at its Best, and Memories that last a Lifetime” clearly this is what we mean.

If you enjoyed these Field Reports, many more can be found in this album on our Facebook page. The Major and his Minions are honored to have been a part of so many unforgettable memories this year, and we look forward to creating even more in 2015.
