The Must-Visit 19th Holes in St. Andrews

Since before the days of the featherie ball, golf and the post-round libation have gone hand in hand. After traversing the windswept links “with weapons ill-equipped for the task,” it’s little wonder that a bit of whisky was in order at the end of the day, perhaps even inspiring Churchill to coin that phrase.

Nowhere do these two pastimes intersect in greater abundance and quality than in St. Andrews, where many of the game’s notable watering holes conveniently rest a mid-iron from the 18th green of the Old Course.

Join us as we raise a glass at a few of the historic, storied, and can’t-miss 19th holes at The Home of Golf.

Jigger Inn

Built in the 1850’s as the stationmaster’s quarters for the old railway, The Jigger Inn today remains one of the must-visit 19th holes in all of golf. Here you may find an eclectic mix of bucket-listers, Hollywood types, University students, and Open champions, all drawn to this wee pub and its spectacular view down the Road Hole. When the weather is nice, we suggest sitting outside and admiring the panorama along with a Jigger Ale; the Inn being one of only two places in the world where you’ll find it. The other being The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin.

The Dunvegan

Over their two decades of ownership, Jack & Sheena Willoughby molded The Dunvegan into an inseparable part of the St. Andrews experience. Put simply, no trip to The Home of Golf is complete until you’ve done two things: taken a photo on the Swilcan Bridge and paid a visit to “The Dunny.” Recently, the Willoughby’s announced it was time to hand over the keys to The Dunvegan, giving them some well earned time to, as Jack put it, “smell the roses.” We certainly wish them well and extend our thanks for playing a role in so many wonderful memories for our travelers. If the new owners have just ¼ of Jack & Sheena’s passion and hospitality, the quintessential 19th hole will be just fine.

Sheena Willoughby shares a few stories and memories from her many years as the proprietor of The Dunvegan in this episode of On the Tee with H&B.

Road Hole Bar

If it’s a lively pub atmosphere that you’re after, we may not suggest this as your first choice for a post-round toast. For that, you’ll want to head to another Old Course Hotel outlet, but more on that later. On the other hand, if you enjoy pairing an exceptional single malt with an equally exceptional view, then look no further than the Road Hole bar. You’ll certainly have no shortage of choices for that dram… Their menu includes a selection from every working distillery in Scotland.

The Keys

Long before the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews built its majestic clubhouse, its members held meetings at the various inns and taverns around town. The Cross Keys Hotel on Market Street was a popular venue, and it was here that Old Tom Morris was given a farewell dinner before departing for his new appointment at Prestwick. The hotel closed long ago, but the pub remains a fine choice to enjoy a glass with locals and fellow golf travelers alike. Do take note of the crossed keys which remain on the building’s exterior in tribute to its former life.

One Under Bar

Another popular, if somewhat hidden, 19th hole in St. Andrews is the One Under Bar. Located just a few steps below the famous Links road adjacent to the 18th hole at The Old Course, the One Under Bar is certain to quench your post-round thirst and appetite. The delicious pub fare pairs perfectly with the extensive cocktail menu. But it’s the atmosphere at the One Under Bar that makes it a favorite stop for H&B travelers visiting St. Andrews. The decor draws on the rich history of the town and this great game.

St. Andrews Brewing Company

The new kid on the block when it comes to this list, The St. Andrews Brewing Company has quickly left its mark on The Home of Golf. From an extensive selection of local craft brews – the H&B Concierge suggests the Yippie IPA or the Crail Ale – to an enjoyable menu of pub grub, this is an outstanding choice to raise a glass after a round on the historic links.

In addition to the town’s watering holes, there’s an abundance of enjoyable things to do in St. Andrews off the golf course. But for those in search of the best 19th holes in The Home of Golf, options are in no short supply.
