“Finca Cortesin is sensational. The hotel, the golf course, the entire package is, quite simply, superb.”

As one of the preeminent golf courses in Spain, one wouldn’t be blamed for assuming that such high praise might have come from Seve or Jose Maria. Like Finca Cortesin itself, however, these are the words of a member of golf’s younger generation. And in this case, Rory McIlroy proved to be wise beyond his years.

Finca Cortesin debuted in 2007 to almost immediate acclaim. So much so, that the World Match Play was relocated here from Wentworth just two years later, and returned in both 2011 and 2012. In a part of the world where golf is in abundance, but unique and memorable golf is a rare commodity, Finca Cortesin seemed to strike a chord with many, and for good reason.

The demanding 2nd hole offers a stern welcome as the longest par-3 on the course, one that is made all the more difficult by the sight of the Mediterranean in the distance. As one begins to settle into the round, we’re presented with the longest par-4 on the Costa del Sol. The 7th has been called a “monster” many times over – a distinction that Luke Donald would likely agree with, given his triple-bogey during the World Match Play. Meanwhile, it’s the climb to the short par-4 9th that is particularly delightful, with the hotel as the backdrop to a short iron that is best left anywhere but short.

Ahead on the back 9, both the 10th and 13th will make their case as Finca’s “signature hole.” The former is a stunning par-3 played from an elevated tee, to a Spanish guitar shaped green with the Estepona Mountains in the distance. While the latter is a demanding par-4 with an approach over water to perhaps the most stunning green site in Spain.

Although yours truly won’t embrace the bold praise of Sergio Garcia, who compared the greens at Finca Cortesin to those of Augusta National, it is safe to say that this is a stunning, fair, and enjoyable test of golf. As great as the golf course might be, it’s the Good Life at Finca Cortesin that will likely prove to be most memorable. The hotel is a regular entry on the Conde Nast Gold List, with a spa that is the very definition of “top drawer.” Say nothing of the view from the clubhouse terrace, which is arguably the finest on the Costa del Sol.
