The Best Fish & Chips in St. Andrews

No visit to St. Andrews is complete without enjoying at least one order of fish & chips.

Of course, the same can be said for Scotland and the U.K. as a whole.

Which may lead you to ask a common question…

Where’s the best fish & chips in St. Andrews?

Like ranking golf courses, determining the best fish & chips in St. Andrews is a highly subjective exercise.

But if you’re planning a trip to The Home of Golf, here are a few of our favorite places to enjoy this famous dish.

Tailend

Many claim the best fish & chips in St. Andrews is found at Tailend. Although we usually strive to remain neutral on such topics, we can’t help but agree.

Tailend has a lovely dining room where you can enjoy both fish & chips and a varied menu of local seafood. Much of which is displayed right as you enter the restaurant at its fish counter.

But in our view, the best way to enjoy fish & chips from Tailend is to order take-away and savor your box of fried goodness behind the 18th green of The Old Course at St. Andrews, as the last golfers of the day finish their rounds.

Cromars

In the battle of the best fish & chips in St. Andrews, Cromars is another mainstay.

In fact Cromars has twice been named the best fish & chips in all of Scotland at the National Fish & Chips Awards. An event that clearly proves the dish is serious business in the U.K.

At their location on Market Street, you can dine in or take-away your fish & chips. You can even opt for a slightly healthier version by ordering your fish grilled instead of battered.

Perhaps most importantly, if you have a sweet tooth after your fish & chips, Cromars is a short stroll from another favorite stop in St. Andrews: Jannettas Gelateria.

Jigger Inn

The Jigger Inn is not only one of the best 19th holes in St. Andrews, it’s also home to a great version of fish & chips.

We must confess, however, that its rank among the best fish & chips in St. Andrews is heavily influenced by the view from the patio.

When the sun shines in St. Andrews, there is simply no better combination than a Jigger Ale and an order of fish & chips, while soaking in the view of The Old Course.

The Dunvegan

When it comes to the best fish & chips in St. Andrews, you’ll be forgiven if you don’t immediately think of The Dunvegan.

After all, The Dunvegan is best known as the famous watering hole “just a 9-iron from The Old Course.”

But if it’s fish & chips with atmosphere that you’re after, you’d be hard pressed to find a better option in The Home of Golf.

The Dunvegan is, in many ways, an embassy for traveling golfers. A post-round pint with an order of fish & chips is almost obligatory for all visitors to St. Andrews.

Bonus: Anstruther Fish Bar

Although not in St. Andrews, the Anstruther Fish Bar is a common stop for those visiting The Home of Golf.

Located about 25 minutes south of St. Andrews, the Anstruther Fish Bar is a perfect pairing with golf at Dumbarnie Links, Elie, or Crail Golfing Society.

It also happens to be a four time winner of the previously mentioned best fish & chips in Scotland award.
